MOTHERWELL, Scotland– American forward Mike Grella's loan to Motherwell of the Scottish Premier League from Leeds of England's second-tier League Championship has been canceled because of FIFA regulations.
A day after announcing the loan, Motherwell said on its Web site Friday that while a player can register for three clubs in a year, he can play for two.
Motherwell chief executive Leeann Dempster said FIFA rules"have worked against us, which is extremely disappointing."
After making just two appearances this season for Leeds, both as a substitute, the 23-year-old was loaned in October to Carlisle of England's third-tier League One, where he scored three goals in 11 games.
