Cruyff says Real losing puff

MADRID (AFP)– Former Barcelona legend Johan Cruyff says Real Madrid are wearing their legs out because they cannot dominate games the way Barcelona does.

Jose Mourinho's team trail Barcelona by seven points in the league after drawing 0-0 at Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday despite battling hard in the Riazor Stadium.

Barcelona beat Mallorca 3-0 earlier the same day to cement their position at the top of the league.

"Where Barca dominates and marks time thanks to its possession of the ball, Madrid wears itself out infinitely because they always, always recover the ball very far from the opponents' area," Cruff wrote in a weekly column in El Periodico de Catalunya published Monday.

"And that means running many more kilometres, and doing it much faster, as much going forward as going back. To attack and if you don't finish off the game then to defend."

Real Madrid could have won in the Riazor, he said.

"Madrid, with a base of good footballers, which they have, always have good chances, but they pay a toll in wearing themselves out too much by not controlling the games."

A three-time European Footballer of the Year, 63-year-old Cruyff started his career as a teenager at Ajax before going on to enjoy huge success with Barcelona, whom he then coached to the 1992 European Cup and four straight league titles between 1991 and 1994.

Dortmund's Langerak ready for debut at Bayern

MUNICH, Germany (AFP)– Australian goalkeeper Mitchell Langerak has said he is ready to cope with the pressure when he makes his debut for Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund in Saturday's key clash at defending champions Bayern Munich.

A knee injury to Borussia's captain and shot-stopper Roman Weidenfeller has handed the 22-year-old Langerak his German league debut at Munich's Allianz Arena in front of a sell-out 66,000 crowd, having joined Dortmund last July.

"It doesn't matter where I make my debut, I will give it my best," said Langerak who will face Bayern's star-studded attack led by Holland's Arjen Robben, France's Franck Ribery and Germany's Bastian Schweinsteiger.

"Besides, I have been working for weeks and months for this chance, I am ready."

The hosts desperately need a win to have a chance of retaining their title as Bayern are third in the league and 13 points behind Dortmund.

This is Langerak's big chance to impress after spending the last 25 games on the bench.

He will be facing Bayern's in-form Germany striker Mario Gomez, who has scored 28 goals in 32 matches for the Bavarian giants this season.

The match kicks off at 1830 local time (1730 GMT).

We'll do it for injured Cesc, vows Wenger

LONDON (AFP)– Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has vowed to win the League Cup for stricken skipper Cesc Fabregas after injury ruled the club captain out of Sunday's clash with Birmingham.

Fabregas limped out of Wednesday's Premier League win over Stoke with a hamstring strain and will now miss Sunday's final at Wembley, where Arsenal are bidding to win their first silverware since 2005.

Wenger said he hoped Arsenal would go on to lift the trophy as a tribute to Fabregas, who is now battling to be fit for the club's Champions League second leg match with Barcelona on March 8.

"It is a very small injury but certainly Cesc will be out for Sunday," Wenger told Arsenal TV."For how long beyond that I don't know, but definitely for Sunday.

"He is disappointed. We all feel sorry and sad for him. The only way we help him now is to win the Carling Cup as he contributed a lot in this competition."

Arsenal will also be missing England international Theo Walcott, who sprained an ankle against Stoke.

Wenger said Walcott was likely to face up to two weeks on the sidelines.

"He has a classic ankle sprain. We don't think there is any more damage to it, but it is still a sprain," he said.

"We are sad for him too. He is out for Sunday and maybe one or two weeks more."

Sunderland's Bruce backs winter break

LONDON (AFP)– Sunderland coach Steve Bruce has added his voice to the growing call for a winter break in English football to ease fixture congestion and revitalise the FA Cup.

Matching the comments of his former boss at Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson, Bruce said that he had been dismayed when his team had been forced to play five games in the space of a fortnight around the turn of the year.

Ferguson has suggested adopting something similar to the German model, in which teams are given a break in January and then resume with their domestic cup competition.

Bruce, who won the FA Cup three times during his spell at United and retains a great affection for the competition, believes a possible revamp and winter break could be combined to mutual benefit.

He told the Black Cats' official website, www.safc.com:"We have to try to arrest something.

"I have had the privilege of going all the way in the FA Cup, and getting to the latter stages is a fantastic thing for any club.

"My thoughts on it are that the competition needs a radical revamp.

"For example, the third round is usually the first Saturday after New Year when everyone is spent up from Christmas, and it becomes a problem for people after they have shelled out the money for their season tickets.

"Maybe we could try to restructure things. I've seen Sir Alex's quotes on a mid-season break - if we're going to be successful as a nation, that has to come into play.

"We are the only nation who doesn't do it. Certainly that would mean a lesser summer, but a mid-season break would be common sense and I agree with Sir Alex.

"You could start off your fixtures again with two FA Cup ties when people haven't seen football for a while. We could kick off again with back-to-back FA Cup ties."

Dortmund'keeper doubtful ahead of Bayern clash

BERLIN (AFP)– Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller is an injury doubt for Saturday nights's key Bundesliga clash at defending champion Bayern Munich with a knee injury.

The possible loss of Weidenfeller could open the way for Dortmund's reserve, ex-Melbourne Victory shot-stopper Mitchell Langerak, 22, to make his first league apperance of the season at the sold-out Allianz Arena in Munich.

The 30-year-old Weidenfeller was injured in a training clash with Germany defender Mat Hummels on Tuesday and Wiedenfeller has been sent for a scan on Wednesday to discover the extent of the injury.

If the scan confirms it is a medial ligament injury, Weidenfeller could be out for up to six weeks with the season set to end on May 14 and currently 10 points clear at the top of the table.

"I hope that it is only stretched, but it was a hard knock and the knee got very swollen in the evening," Weidenfeller told German daily newspaper Bild.

"I have some pain with it."

Bayern are third in the table and 13 points behind the leaders who are on course for their first league title since 2002.

Palestinian women footballers tackle taboos

AL-RAM, Palestinian Territories (AFP)– The stadium was packed to the rafters with raucous fans, mostly female, who had turned out to watched the first-ever public encounter in the Palestinian women's football league.

They came in their thousands, many lugging'tableh' drums or carrying Palestinian flags, to watch Seriyyat Ramallah take on Diyyar Bethlehem in the opening match of the league at the Faisal al-Husseini stadium near Jerusalem.

Most of the 8,000 spectators packing the stands of this recently-renovated stadium were women, many of whom had travelled from all parts of the occupied West Bank to watch the match.

Women have been playing football in the Palestinian territories for years but the conservative mores of this traditional society have meant that until now, the games have been played behind closed doors.

As the players ran on to the pitch -- Bethlehem's first 11 wearing a red and green strip, and Ramallah in black -- a lively debate broke out among spectators.

In a special enclosure for the male spectators, some found it hard to swallow the idea of a group of women sweating it out on the pitch in shorts and t-shirts.

"This league is a new and strange thing for we Palestinians," admits Mohamed Omar al-Din, who has travelled all the way from Gaza to watch the contest, his permit to travel acquired through the Palestinian football league.

"It is the first time we have seen anything like this but I'm OK with it."

Asked if he would let his sister participate, he says he would -- if he didn't live in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.

"I would let her if we lived in the West Bank but in Gaza, it's impossible because it is a different place," he says."People know us there."

Mohamed Zdudi, who also came from Gaza for the occasion, says the league proves the Palestinians are moving with the times, although he is less receptive to the idea of women's matches being played in public.

"This league is our way of keeping pace with evolution, nothing more," he said.

"But I would prefer girls to play football behind closed doors with the games watched only by women."

He doesn't want to talk religion, but gruffly admits he"would never let his sister play in such clothes in public."

As the crowd warms up, the stands come alive with chanting, flag-waving and the echo of nationalist songs as the fans roar encouragement to the two teams.

"A female football league is a great thing," enthuses Majeda Rabiyeh, a woman in her 40s who is rhythmically thumping a drum in support of Diyyar Bethlehem, her home team.

"I would support my daughter if she wanted to play football."

But another woman pours scorn on the level of the game, saying it was just not up to the same standard as the male teams.

"It doesn't matter how good these girls are, they will never be as good as the boys," she sniffed.

The idea that women should be barred from playing sport in public is anathema to journalist Amaal Jumaa, who belongs to the Women's Affairs Technical Committee, a Palestinian NGO which works to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women in society.

"Women are entitled to play sports in public just like men, it is their right -- physically, spiritually and as human beings."

"I ask all of those who are against it to put themselves in these women's shoes: how would they feel if they were barred from playing in public just because of the shape of their body?"

In spite of grumbles about the teams'"immodest" clothing, the player coming in for the most flak is Diyyar's Niveen Kleb, who scored the first goal, and was the only player on the field wearing a hijab -- and a long-sleeved t-shirt and leggings under her red and green strip.

Speaking to AFP after the game, which Diyyar won 2-0, Kleb said she was proud of her hijab and felt"special" on the pitch, saying it"reflects a very good image of veiled Palestinian women" despite many describing her participation as"haram", Arabic for"forbidden".

Warda Hassan, another Diyyar player wearing a headscarf and sitting on the subs bench, said there was no conflict between her life on the pitch and her faith.

"There is no problem between my hijab and my game," she told AFP, saying her family supported her choice to play football.

At the kick-off, prime minister Salam Fayyad described the moment as"an historic day for Palestinian women, sports and the Palestinian people."

And Palestinian Football Federation chief Jibril Rajub described the move to bring the league into the public eye as nothing less than"a social, political and sports revolution for women".

The season will run for 10 weeks with six teams competing for the title.

Mourinho prepares Real for Lyon revenge

MADRID (AFP)– Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho admits his side have two major psychological barriers to overcome when they travel to Lyon on Tuesday for the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie.

Nine-time winners Real have fallen at the last 16 stage in each of their last six seasons and Mourinho believes that is something his team have to get over along with the fact that Lyon eliminated Real 2-1 at this stage of the competition last season.

"There are two barriers we have to overcome: getting into the quarter-finals and overcoming a Lyon team that eliminated us the last time we met," Mourinho said.

"I am not losing any sleep (over Lyon). Since the day the draw was made I have worked with my team to find out all the details about Lyon. We also have (Zinedine) Zidane who knows them well."

French legend Zidane is an advisor to Real president Florentino Perez and has been giving Real inside information on his compatriots.

Real defeated Levante 2-0 on Saturday as Mourinho stretched his unbeaten league home record with Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real to an incredible nine years.

Mourinho's team have won all 12 of their league home matches but have not been as convincing away from home, dropping 12 points on the road, and have had one day's less rest than their French opponents who played on Friday.

"I liked that my team played a serious match," Mourinho said."These games ahead of Champions League matches can be complicated because players may focus more on the European competition.

"Levante were organised in defence, but we scored early and had things under control. Winning and resting players is what mattered."

Togo forward Emmanuel Adebayor, German midfielder Mesut Ozil and Spanish playmaker Xabi Alonso were all rested against Levante.

"I picked a team that was good enough to win the game but with respect to our opponents," the Portuguese added."We gave a rest to (Mesut) Ozil and Xabi (Alonso). Everyone knows they will play in Lyon against a team that have had 24 hours more rest than us, which is a lot."

Cristiano Ronaldo started against Levante and Mourinho said his countryman was feeling fit and didn't need to be rested ahead of the Lyon clash.

"Cristiano always likes to play. He is fine from a physical standpoint and does not feel tired, so why should I take him out?" asked Mourinho.

Ronaldo is confident Real Madrid can reverse last season's shock defeat as Mourinho"knows how to win."

"Last year we were very close, but this time it will be totally different," the Portuguese striker told Spanish sports daily AS published Monday."The coach is very experienced and knows how to win. We will go out there knowing that Lyon are a very difficult team in the Champions League.

"We have to think that they are Barcelona or Milan, because they are a tough opponent and physical," he said.

"We must have the ambition to win. We want to reach the final at Wembley" on May 28."I consider us the favorites."

Mourinho has already won the Champions League with Porto and Inter Milan.

French international forward Karim Benzema scored the opening goal in the Levante win and hopes to get the chance to face his hometown club who sold him to Real for 35 million euros.

"It is a difficult match against a good team," said Benzema."I am especially looking forward to it because I have my friends and family there. I hope to beat Lyon and win the Champions League."

Arsenal manager demands no let-up against Orient in FA Cup

LONDON (AFP)– Arsene Wenger has demanded his Arsenal side maintain the standards they set in beating Barcelona when they face League One Leyton Orient in the FA Cup fifth round on Sunday.

Wenger?s side hit new heights against the La Liga champions following a second half comeback that confirmed them to be genuine challengers in the Champions League.

That win, however, came just eleven days after Wenger?s team had squandered a four-goal lead at Newcastle, prompting questions about their consistency and mental strength.

The Gunners manager believes his side can succeed in all four competitions -- Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and the League Cup -- but to do so he knows his side must avoid further slip-ups.

It clearly won?t take anything like the level of performance that accounted for Barcelona to win comfortably at the Matchroom Stadium, but the manager has demanded standards are maintained nonetheless.

"We can gain more respect from everybody if we turn up on Sunday with absolutely full commitment then people will say this team is ready to have a real go and not choose the competition or the games," Wenger said.

"When you are a top-level competitive man or team you go absolutely 100 per cent committed into every game.

"The media give more importance to some games than others but for us to win trophies we have to take a distance with that and be able to switch from one competition to another with exactly the same commitment."

Arsenal have failed to win a trophy since their 2005 FA Cup triumph but Wenger remains confident his side is capable of making a clean sweep of silverware this season.

"We want to go for every competition," he said."I believe we can go in every one to the end but it can also stop very quickly. It's down to how much we believe and how much commitment we show.

"I'm convinced we have the hunger and we have some talent and we are all committed to go as far as we can."

Wenger?s hopes have been lifted by the news centre back Johan Djourou could be back after recovering from a back injury sustained against Barcelona.

Theo Walcott has also recovered from a hamstring problem and right back Bacary Sagna returns after suspension.

"From the other night we have not lost anybody with a big injury," said Wenger."Djourou looks to be much better than expected, Walcott as well.

"(Abou) Diaby is suspended so he will not be involved but he could not play anyway, he is not ready."

Orient?s future has thrown into focus in the past week because of the proposal for West Ham to takeover the nearby Olympic Stadium after the 2012 Olympics.

The League One club?s home is located close to the stadium and chairman Barry Hearn has raised fears that the presence of a Premier League team on their doorstep could ultimately kill off the smaller outfit.

Attention will switch back to football this weekend, however, with Russell Slade's side -- who lay tenth going into the latest round of league fixtures -- going into the tie on the back of an eleven-game unbeaten run.

Orient centre back Ben Chorley has added incentive to help spring an upset after being released by Wenger in 2003.

"When I was in the youth team at Arsenal we had a lot of success, but I was 21, in the third year of my professional contract and had a chance to go and play for Wimbledon," said Chorley.

"I thought I needed to go and play, and I haven't looked back. Some 250 games on I finally have the chance to prove to Arsenal that they were wrong."

Giggs signs one-year extension with Man Utd

LONDON (AFP)– Manchester United's long-serving midfielder Ryan Giggs has signed a one-year contract extension with the Premier League giants, it was confirmed Friday.

Giggs, who turned 37 in November, had already signalled his intention to prolong his Old Trafford career into a 21st season, and the club confirmed Friday the deal had now been signed.

"All I've ever wanted to do is play for United and I've been lucky enough to do that for 20 years," said Giggs.

"It is great to know I'm still contributing to the team's success and I feel I've got a lot to offer on and off the pitch.

"This is an exciting time to be involved with so many good young players coming through."

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has used Giggs selectively in recent seasons, although the evergreen midfielder has maintained his knack of making important contributions to the United cause.

His exquisite pass set up Nani's opening goal in the Manchester derby last week, a match United won to maintain their healthy lead at the top of the table. If United win the league it will give Giggs a record 12 league winners medals.

Giggs has made more than 800 appearances for United and recently played his 600th Premier League game.

Joe Jordan rejects claims by headbutter Gattuso

LONDON, England (AFP)– Tottenham coach Joe Jordan has rubbished claims by Gennaro Gattuso that a racist remark was to blame for the AC Milan midfielder's headbutt on the Scot earlier this week.

Gattuso has been charged with"gross unsporting conduct" by UEFA after headbutting former Milan striker Jordan following Spurs' 1-0 Champions League last-16 first-leg win at the San Siro on Tuesday.

UEFA's control and disciplinary body will discuss the case against the 33-year-old Italian on February 21.

His agent Claudio Pasqualin claimed Jordan had called him an"Italian bastard" but the Scot has rubbished those allegations.

"To come up with something like that is pathetic," Jordan told the Daily Mail on Friday."It is completely and utterly untrue and something so wildly inaccurate doesn't do him much credit.

"He clearly doesn't realise I consider playing for Milan the proudest time of my career, that my daughter lives and works in Italy and that I love the country and the people.

"It's just a nonsense, it really is."

Gattuso cut a frustrated figure during the defeat to Tottenham Tuesday and regularly squared up to beanpole striker Peter Crouch after challenges between the pair.

He also argued with Jordan on the touchline before pushing the former Milan player in the neck. It was after the game that the Italian ran over to confront Jordan again before head-butting the 59-year-old.

UPDATE 1-Soccer-Hicks can seek damages over Liverpool deal

* Hicks wins legal battle

* High Court judge amends terms (adds details)

LONDON, Feb 17 (Reuters) - Tom Hicks, the American formerowner of Liverpool Football Club, won a legal battle on Thursdayto seek damages over the sale of the Premier League team lastyear to the owners of the Boston Red Sox baseball team.

Hicks and fellow American George Gillett pledged last yearto use all legal means to secure damages of at least$1.6billion over the contested sale of the club to John W. Henry'sNew England Sports Ventures for 300 million pounds ($483.8million).

Hicks and Gillett called the sale"illegal" and"anextraordinary swindle" but the board went ahead and sold thefive-times European champions last October, with the blessing ofmajor creditor Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS).

Hicks and Gillett said they had offered to pay outstandingdebt to the RBS but that attempt was rejected.

Hicks had sought to lift court orders which had preventedhim taking action in his home state of Texas to halt the deal inwhich he claims he lost 140 million pounds.

A High Court judge dismissed that application but amendedthe terms to allow Hicks to make applications in the U.S. insupport of any proceedings in this country if he gives sevendays notice to the parties he is suing, the Press Associationnews agency reported. (Editing by Ed Osmond)

Crouch stuns Milan as Spurs take Champions lead

MILAN, Italy (AFP)– Tottenham's dream European adventure continued at the San Siro on Tuesday night as Peter Crouch grabbed the only goal in a 1-0 victory over AC Milan.

Despite playing without the injured Gareth Bale, the hat-trick hero when Spurs last played in this stadium in a 4-3 defeat to Inter Milan, Spurs put in a controlled and professional performance that belied their relative inexperience on this stage.

Crouch struck 10 minutes from time on a lightning counter attack in a half otherwise dominated by the hosts.

It puts the English side in a strong position ahead of the second leg at what will surely be a white hot White Hart Lane in three weeks time.

"What a performance from us. We stood tall to a man, Sandro, Steven Pienaar, Michael Dawson, Heurelho Gomes... I could go on," said Spurs manager Harry Redknapp.

"I said to the lads, too, at half time to get it to Aaron Lennon whenever we could because he tore the left-back apart all night - and his role in the goal was fantastic. It's a great night for the fans and a great night for Tottenham."

Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri said his side hadn't got going early enough.

"In the first half we were too afraid to go forward, it was difficult to play in suich tight spaces and we made many mistakes," he said.

"That allowed Tottenham to win the ball and counter. In the second half we changed but our efforts weren't enough."

Given that Tottenham are playing in their first season in the Champions League under its current format and Milan are seven-time kings of Europe, it was surprisingly the visitors who settled quickest.

They opened up their hosts after just five minutes with a fine move as a long cross from Vedran Corluka found Crouch, who controlled the ball on his chest but then slipped at the crucial moment and was crowded by Gennaro Gattuso before firing off a rushed shot.

On 11 minutes another great move from Spurs saw Corluka put Aaron Lennon in behind Luca Antonini but Christian Abbiati dived out to punch his cross off Crouch's head.

More good work from Spurs ended with Rafael van der Vaart scuffing a shot from 20 yards.

Abbiati had to come off with a head injury and was taken to hospital, to be replaced by Marco Amelia.

Milan's only chance of note was a Zlatan Ibrahimovic free-kick that didn't trouble Heurelho Gomes.

Just before half-time Van der Vaart tried his luck from distance but Amelia tipped it over the bar.

And just after the restart he beat the goalkeeper with a clever chip that sailed just wide of the post.

Milan finally threatened on 50 minutes as Gattuso stood the ball up and Mario Yepes met it with a bullet header that Gomes saved brilliantly with one hand.

Mathieu Flamini was then very lucky to stay on the field for a horror two-footed lunge with studs showing on Corluka, receiving only a yellow card.

Corluka had to be replaced with Jonathan Woodgate.

On the hour Gomes then made another point blank save from a Yepes header.

Milan were bossing the game by this stage and Flamini had a shot charged down that looked headed goalwards.

Spurs then hit Milan with a rapier counter-attack as substitute Luca Modric sent Lennon scampering away and he skinned Yepes, who tried in vain to bring him down, before squaring for Crouch to slot into an unguarded net.

Michael Dawson threw himself in front of a Robinho effort as Milan made an injury time rally.

And Ibrahimovic had the ball in the net with an acrobatic volley that was disallowed for a marginal offside.

The game ended with ugly scenes as Gattuso appeared to aim a headbutt at Spurs assistant manager and former Milan player Joe Jordan, igniting a scuffle involving several players and staff.

"They lost their heads at the end there - they were rattled for sure - and I guess that's a good sign," added Redknapp.

"I know who I'd pick between Joe Jordan and Gennaro Gattuso anyway... Joe all night long. All night long."

Davies signs new Bolton deal

LONDON (AFP)– Mark Davies on Wednesday signed a new deal with Bolton tying him to the Premier League side until 2015.

The midfielder, who joined Bolton from Wolves in January 2009, has emerged as a key player under manager Owen Coyle this season, making 25 appearances and scoring once.

The 22-year-old is delighted to have been rewarded with a new four-and-a-half-year deal.

He said:"The football club has been good to me since I moved here two years ago and I'm really settled in the area. The manager believes in me and I feel like I'm part of his plans."

Coyle, whose side are eighth in the table and pushing for a Europa League spot, told www.bwfc.co.uk:"Mark was already under contract but what this shows is that we are trying to build a football club for years to come.

"The nucleus is centred around young, exciting players and Mark certainly comes into that category.

"He is enjoying an extended run in the team at the moment and he is showing his qualities. To have a player of his ilk commit his long-term future to the football club is a tremendous boost."

Ba brace lifts West Ham off bottom

PARIS (AFP)– Senegalese Demba Ba was the stand-out African footballer in weekend league action across Europe as his brace salvaged a point for West Ham and lifted them off the bottom of the English Premiership table.

West Ham appeared doomed when trailing 3-0 at half-time away to West Bromwich Albion only for Ba to score early in the second half and equalise seven minutes from full-time in a six-goal thriller.

Ghanaian Asamoah Gyan and Ivorian Steve Gohouri were other African scorers in England, Gervinho of Ivory Coast and Razak Boukari of Togo scored in France and Ivorian Didier Ya Konan and Tunisian Sami Allagui netted in Germany.

ENGLAND

ASAMOAH GYAN (Sunderland)

The Ghana striker scored his 10th goal of the season but couldn't prevent his side falling to a 2-1 home defeat against Tottenham. Gyan put Sunderland ahead in the 11th minute with a fine shot on the turn from Kieran Richardson's cross.

OBAFEMI MARTINS (Birmingham)

The Nigeria striker played for 75 minutes on his Birmingham debut in a 1-0 win over Stoke at St Andrews. Martins, who has joined the Blues on loan from Rubin Kazan, was off the pitch by the time Birmingham got their last-minute winner but made a confident start on his return to the Premier League.

STEVE GOHOURI (Wigan)

The Ivory Coast defender scored his first goal in English football to help Wigan earn a 1-1 draw at Liverpool. Gohouri had made 23 appearances without a goal since his pre-season move from Borussia Monchengladbach but he struck in the 65th minute by turning in Antolin Alcaraz's pass.

DEMBA BA (West Ham)

The Senegal striker scored twice as West Ham staged a stunning fightback to earn a 3-3 draw at West Bromwich Albion. West Ham trailed 3-0 at half-time but Ba started the revival with a close-range finish in the 50th minute and bagged the equaliser with a brilliant 83rd-minute strike. Thanks to Ba, West Ham moved off the bottom of the table.

JEAN MAKOUN (Aston Villa)

The Cameroon midfielder was sent off in the 70th minute for an ugly foul on Blackpool's DJ Campbell in a 1-1 draw at Bloomfield Road. Makoun's rash lunge brought a straight red card from referee Howard Webb.

YAYA TOURE (Man City)

The Ivory Coast midfielder was on the receiving end of Wayne Rooney's magic as City were beaten 2-1 by local rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford. City were level at 1-1 with 12 minutes to play but their title hopes were dented when Rooney scored with a sensational overhead kick.

FRANCE

GERVINHO (Lille)

Ivory Coast forward Gervinho scored one goal and made another as Lille beat Toulouse 2-0 to re-establish a five-point lead at the top of the table. Gervinho scrambled in the opener in the 38th minute after Moussa Sow had been denied by Toulouse goalkeeper Matthieu Valverde, before teeing up substitute Tulio de Melo for Lille's second in stoppage time.

MUSTAPHA BAYAL SALL (Saint-Etienne)

The Senegalese centre-back endured a nightmare in his side's 4-1 defeat at home to derby rivals Lyon, playing an unwitting role in two of the visitors' goals. Bayal scored an own goal in the 40th minute, inadvertently diverting a Cris header past his own goalkeeper to put Lyon 2-1 ahead, and it was from his weak backward header that Michel Bastos gave OL a two-goal cushion with just over 20 minutes remaining.

RAZAK BOUKARI (Rennes)

Togolese international Boukari, a January signing from Lens, was a constant menace in Rennes' 2-0 victory at home to Nice. Unfortunate not to win a penalty after being tripped by Renato Civelli in the first half, he claimed his side's second goal from the penalty spot in the 58th minute as Frederic Antonetti's team climbed to second in the table.

GERMANY

DIDIER YA KONAN (Hanover 96)

The Ivory Coast forward scored his 11th goal of the season when he netted in his team's 1-1 draw with Werder Bremen which ended honours even after Germany defender Per Mertesacker equalised.

ISAAC VORSAH (Hoffenheim)

The Ghana defender played the first half of his side's 4-0 defeat at defending champions Bayern Munich. Play-makers Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery dominated the guests defence with flying Dutchman Robben scoring twice to give him four goals from four games since he returned to football in January.

SAMI ALLAGUI (Mainz)

The Tunisia striker netted in Mainz's 4-2 defeat at Cologne as Germany striker Lukas Podolski scored twice as his team backed up last week's shock victory over Bayern Munich with another win.

ITALY

SAMUEL ETO'O (Inter Milan)

Not one of the Cameroon captain's most memorable evenings in the 1-0 defeat at Juventus despite looking his team's most serious threat throughout. After a quiet first period he was heavily involved after the break but missed Inter's best chance. It was a startling miss from Eto'o who arrived at the back post to crash a shot against the bar from five yards with an empty goal gaping. He had two more clear chances but was smothered by Juve goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon on the first and missed his volley completely with the second.

HOUSSINE KHARJA (Inter)

The Moroccan midfielder did not have one of his better games for Inter and was replaced early in the second period as coach Leonardo threw on forward Goran Pandev to try to salvage a result. Kharja had done little wrong but struggled to have an effect on proceedings.

MOMO SISSOKO (Juventus)

A substitute late on against Inter as Juve tried to hold on to their 1-0 lead, the Mali midfielder put himself around as expected. He picked up a booking for a foul on Wesley Sneijder but also provided vital cover for a defence increasingly coming under pressure, making some timely interceptions and tackles.

SPAIN

EMMANUEL ADEBAYOR (Real Madrid)

Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor kept French forward Karim Benzema on the Real substitutes' bench once again as he helped 10-man Real Madrid win 1-0 at Espanyol. Adebayor, on loan from Manchester City, hit the crossbar and missed two good chances late on as Real survived playing with one man less for virtually the entire match to close within five points of league leaders Barcelona.

CARLOS KAMENI (Espanyol)

Cameroon goalkeeper Kameni had an inspired game for Espanyol, foiling Adebayor twice and also denying Cristiano Ronaldo, although it was not enough to prevent his side losing 1-0 at home to 10-man Real Madrid. Kameni kept his side in the game with two terrific point-blank saves from Adebayor in the closing stages.

SEYDOU KEITA (Barcelona)

Mali midfielder Keita was a second half substitute as Barcelona saw their record streak of 16 consecutive league wins come to an end with a 1-1 draw at Sporting Gijon. Keita replaced Gaby Milito as Barcelona pressed for an equaliser that arrived on 79 minutes through David Villa.

Barcelona see record run ended by strugglers Gijon

MADRID (AFP)– League leaders Barcelona saw their record winning run come to an end with a shock 1-1 draw at Sporting Gijon and it could have been worse had David Villa not scored a brilliant 79th-minute equaliser to salvage a point.

Barcelona had won 16 consecutive league games to beat the old mark of the great Real Madrid side of 1960/61. But the champions saw their historical sequence broken and the two dropped points are a real boost for title rivals Real.

Barcelona are now eight points ahead of Real in the Spanish first division and Jose Mourinho's side will want to capitalise on the rare slip by winning at Espanyol on Sunday.

Unfashionable Sporting, two points above the relegation zone, took the lead through David Barral after 16th minutes and Barcelona needed a delightful chip from Villa late on to snatch a point.

"We managed to get a draw and we have to be happy with a point," said Villa."Barcelona never settle for a draw because we always like to win, but it is true that Sporting were superior to us in certain aspects."

It was the first away points dropped all season for Barcelona, who had won all 10 of their away games prior to this game, and coach Pep Guardiola will hope for a better display on Wednesday when his side travel to Arsenal for the first leg of their last 16 Champions League tie.

A fired-up Sporting started the better of the two sides and took a surprise 16th-minute lead as Barral cut inside from the left flank and left Gerard Pique in his wake before firing low into the corner.

Barcelona don't often go behind and found it difficult to respond against hosts who defended deep in numbers.

The champions didn't have a noteworthy effort on goal until just after the half hour mark when Andres Iniesta shot across goal but goalkeeper Ivan Cuellar saved well.

On 53 minutes right back Dani Alves nipped past his man and cut the ball back for Xavi but the midfielder scuffed his shot and Cuellar smothered the effort.

Two minutes later Lionel Messi was foiled by Cuellar at his near post and Alves almost scored a minute later.

Sporting could barely get out of their half but Barcelona did not make the breakthrough until the 79th minute with Villa floating a delightful chip over Cuellar.

Villa did not celebrate the goal out of respect for hometown club Gijon where he began his career before going on to become a world superstar.

Elsewhere the future of Atletico Madrid coach Quique Sanchez Flores is hanging by a thread after a Joaquin brace helped Valencia to a 2-1 comeback win at the Vicente Calderon on Saturday.

Joaquin scored an 86th minute winner to punish Atletico, who have won just once in 2011 under Flores, and Valencia move two points above Villarreal into third place.

Atletico are seven points off the top six, with the the pre-season target of Champions League football out of sight, and Flores could face the axe with his old team Valencia, where he played for 10 years and who he managed for two seasons, possibly putting the final nail in his coffin.

"The fans cheer me up because they appreciate things and that's why I will do everything I possibly can to turn things around," said Flores.

Atletico got the perfect start with Jose Antonio Reyes putting them ahead after just three minutes, however, Joaquin levelled for Valencia on 41 minutes.

Diego Forlan missed a crucial penalty on 56 minutes and Joaquin scored a fine winner curling in a right-footed shot from just outside the area with four minutes left.

It propelled Valencia into third and was the perfect preparation for their Champions League last 16 first leg match at home to Schalke on Tuesday.

In other matches, 10-man Racing Santander defeated Sevilla 3-2 in an enthralling match on Saturday to give new coach Marcelino a winning start.

Substitute Manuel Arana scored a stoppage time winner to lift Racing four points above the relegation zone while Sevilla stay six points off the top six.

Racing went two goals up inside the first 19 minutes, however, goalscorer Christian Salas was sent off on 39 minutes for violent conduct and Sevilla levelled at 2-2 before Arana's sensational winner.

Valencia's Mestalla to host Copa del Rey final

MADRID– Valencia's Mestalla Stadium has been selected to host the Copa del Rey final between Barcelona and Real Madrid on April 20, what could be one of four games between the Spanish powers in a 16-day span.

The Spanish football federation said Friday the clubs agreed to play at the 52,000-capacity stadium. Barcelona is vying for its 26th domestic cup trophy while Madrid is playing for its 18th and first since 1993.

Real Madrid hosts Barcelona in the Spanish league on April 16 or 17. If both advance to the quarterfinals of the Champions League, they could be drawn to face each other on April 5-6 and 12-13.

Barcelona (20-1-1), two-time defending league champion, holds seven-point lead over Madrid (17-2-3).

West Brom appoint Hodgson head coach

LONDON (AFP)– Former Liverpool coach Roy Hodgson has been appointed head coach of West Brom, the Premier League club confirmed Friday.

West Brom, who fired Roberto Di Matteo earlier this week, hired Hodgson just over a month after he was sacked by Liverpool.

Hodgson, 63, was voted English football's manager of the year last season, after successfully guiding Fulham to the Europa League Final.

His new contract with the Baggies runs until June 2012, West Brom announced on their website.

"West Bromwich Albion are delighted to announce they have appointed Roy Hodgson as the club's new head coach," the statement read.

"The 63-year-old former Inter Milan, Switzerland, Fulham and Liverpool boss has committed himself to the club until June 2012."

Hodgson won the job ahead of the likes of former Newcastle boss Chris Hughton and ex-Albion star Martin Jol.

The former Inter Milan and Switzerland manager may have failed at Liverpool, but his successful spell at Fulham persuaded Albion that he could thrive again at a smaller club.

He took over at Fulham in December 2007 and led the club to survival that season before a seventh-place finish in 2008-09 secured the Cottagers a place in Europe.

An unlikely run to the Europa League final followed, where they were beaten by Atletico Madrid, with Hodgson leaving for Anfield soon after.

Hodgson is back in management just over a month after his departure from Anfield and he will not have to wait long for a chance to exact some revenge on his former club, with Liverpool due at The Hawthorns on April 2.

Liverpool's owners New England Sports Ventures put an end to Hodgson's miserable spell on Merseyside on January 8 and installed club legend Kenny Dalglish, who has inspired an immediate up-turn in the team's fortunes.

First-team coach Michael Appleton, who was appointed caretaker manager on Sunday after Di Matteo's dismissal, will remain in charge for Saturday's crucial relegation showdown against fellow strugglers West Ham.

Albion, who have won only one of their last 10 matches in all competitions, are only two points clear of the drop zone and bottom of the table West Ham would climb above the Baggies with a win at The Hawthorns.

Lampard says England's future brighter

COPENHAGEN (AFP)– Frank Lampard believes England's future is beginning to look brighter after many of Fabio Capello's new selections made a big impact in Wednesday's 2-1 friendly victory over Denmark.

Lampard was named captain for the first time in his international career as he won his 84th cap but it was relative new boys Ashley Young, Darren Bent, Jack Wilshere and Scott Parker who made a real impact in Copenhagen and gave Capello encouragement that his team is finally getting over their World Cup hangover.

Bent scored only his second goal for England in his eighth appearance as he equalised Daniel Agger's early opener and then Young, only recently converted from winger to striker by Aston Villa, hit the winner in the Parken Stadium - his first ever for England.

Arsenal teenager Wilshere made his full debut and showed real promise while Parker also made an international return as a second-half substitute and now becomes a trivia question king after winning his fourth cap, each one while he was playing for a different club; Charlton, Chelsea, Newcastle and West Ham.

England now go to Cardiff for a Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales next month and Lampard believes spirits should be high.

Lampard said:"I was very proud to lead the team out - it was very nice for me personally.

"I have had a lot of caps to get to captain the team for the first team but I am very proud and pleased it ended in a win.

"It was an important win too - with this game you will always have the qualifier in mind next month. We are happy to get the winning habit - it's been a long time that we have been apart and with a slightly different team I think we have got a good momentum now.

"fter going 1-0 down, we showed good character, passed the ball about and won the game.

"We have learned a lot from it. We have learned that Wilshere can come in and continue showing the composure he plays with for Arsenal; credit to him on his full debut because it isn't easy but he is only going to get better and better now.

"On top of that Darren Bent comes in and scores early on, Ashley Young comes on and scores so I think it's been good."

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney who, like Lampard and Wilshere, was taken off at half-time, also praised the players who guided England to victory after Denmark, with Ajax midfielder Christian Eriksen outstanding, had made a hugely encouraging start.

"We deserved the win so we're delighted," he said.

"We weren't happy conceding the goal in the way we did but thankfully we came back.

"Benty did what he does - score goals - and Ashley Young scored so we're pleased. We played better as the game went on.

"I thought Jack Wilshere did really well - he is really composed on the ball and really good to play with so I thought he did really well.

"The manager is trying to give players a chance and they are starting to take those chances.

"With Ash, he has been playing behind the forward for Villa and you could see he did that tonight and got his goal so he's always a threat in there.

"It was valuable experience especially for those lads who haven't got that many games under their belts. This'll be a good experience for them. We are looking to the Wales game now and hopefully we can get the three points there."

Europe hosts string of midweek intl football friendlies

PARIS (AFP)– Half a season on from a World Cup where their respective teams largely failed to impress, England, Germany, Italy and France will use midweek friendlies to chart a course for happier times which they hope can materialise at Euro 2012.

England boss Fabio Capello, and German, Italian and French counterparts Joachim Loew, Laurent Blanc and Cesare Prandelli will be out to show that they are building solid foundations for the end of next season.

And the unavailability of several experienced names brings an opportunity to nurture young blood.

Europe's traditional powerhouses had won nine World Cups between them before Spain put them in the shade last summer in breaking their duck in South Africa.

Capello's charges, chastened in South Africa, now head to Copenhagen to meet Denmark on Wednesday.

And the Italian knows he has his work cut out as summer blues lingered into autumn with a 2-1 defeat against France at Wembley in October, which did little to restore English morale while suggesting France have recovered from their travails under Blanc's predecessor Raymond Domenech.

With a Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales a month away, Capello will use the game against the Danes to see if young starlets such as Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere are ready to step up to the plate.

Wilshere is set to start alongside Chelsea veteran Frank Lampard with the latter's habitual sidekick Steven Gerrard missing out after injuring his groin in Liverpool's 1-0 win over Chelsea on Sunday.

"Gerrard has a groin problem. We've spoken to the England team, he's got to go to let them have a look at him but he won't be playing," Anfield boss Kenny Dalglish indicated.

With regular skipper Rio Ferdinand also injured Capello will likely choose Lampard or Wayne Rooney to wear the armband.

In attack, Rooney with partner Darren Bent, who has quickly found his feet with Villa since his big-money move from Sunderland.

"Everyone knows he is terrible for defenders in the box, but now he is a player who can play for the team and not just himself," opined Capello.

Other attractive friendly dates include France meeting Brazil in a repeat of the 1998 World Cup final, while Germany go up against Italy, who suffered a debacle in South Africa, failing to get out of their group.

Germany at least finished third and will want to shine against the team that deprived them of a 2006 World Cup final on home soil in their most recent meeting

Prandelli brings back veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon less than a month after making his injury comeback to bring some experience to the side and has also called in Inter Milan's Brazilian-born midfielder Thiago Motta.

Loew will have a pacy attack including wingers Mesut Ozil of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich's Thomas Mueller but Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez is missing with a knee injury and ex-captain Michael Ballack is also sidelined so Bayern defender Philipp Lahm is set to skipper the side.

Loew has called up 18-year-old Dortmund starlet Mario Goetze, who made his senior debut in Sweden last November.

France bombed as badly as Italy at the World Cup but under Blanc the seedlings of recovery are taking root as witnessed by the win over England while he has stressed his authority by refusing to bow to political pressure regarding bringing back - or not - ringleaders of the summer rebellion protesting the disciplining of Nicolas Anelka.

He says selection is purely his affair - but has left out Patrice Evra, although for footballing reasons as the Manchester United man has fallen behind Barcelona's Eric Abidal in the left-back pecking order.

Evra was available after completing his post-World Cup suspension handed down for his role as captain in the infamous World Cup strike.

Brazil are also getting to grips with a new man at the helm after Mano Menezes replaced Dunga.

The auriverde lost 1-0 to arch-rivals Argentina in their last friendly outing - but France winger Florent Malouda insists the five-time world champions are"a point of reference at the global level."

Menezes named a squad of purely Europe-based players and there was thus no place for livewire Santos forward Neymar, headlining the Under-20 South American championship in Peru.

World Cup stars such as centre-back Lucio, Real Madrid playmaker Kaka and striker Luis Fabiano miss out but striker Renauto Augusto of Bayer Leverkusen may start.

Spain, without gastroenteritis-stricken Cesc Fabregas, meanwhile welcome Colombia, while their conquered World Cup final rivals Holland host Austria and Argentina take on Portugal in Geneva.

Timbers forward Bright Dike out 6 to 9 months

PORTLAND, Ore.– Portland Timbers forward Bright Dike (DEE-kay) has had surgery to repair a ruptured right Achilles' tendon.

Dr. Jonathan Greenleaf, the team's director of medicine, operated Monday at Tigard, Ore.

The 24-year-old Dike is projected to be sidelined six-to-nine months, which means he will miss most if not all of the Timbers' first season in Major League Soccer. Dike was hurt during Friday's preseason game against the Ventura County Fusion.

West Brom start search for new head coach

LONDON (AFP)– West Bromwich will take their time before naming a successor as coach to Roberto Di Matteo, who was sacked on Sunday although several names are already being mentioned.

Di Matteo's 18-month reign at the the Midlands side came after 13 defeats in their last 18 games spanning all competitions.

Immediately names such as Roy Hodgson, Sam Allardyce, Chris Hughton, former Albion skipper Derek McInnes and ex-West Brom player Martin Jol were linked with a move to the Hawthorns.

But sources close to Albion insist no replacement for Di Matteo had been lined up before the decision was taken by the board to axe the 40-year-old Italian.

They have enough confidence in first-team coach Michael Appleton - now in temporary charge - to do a competent job while the search goes on.

Appleton may even be considered as a candidate - in the same way as Steve Kean has been promoted from within at Blackburn - if he proves his worth in the hotseat.

West Brom legend and club record goalscorer Tony'Bomber' Brown believes Di Matteo should have been given more time to revive the club's fortunes.

Brown said:"I am in shock. It all happened so quick. It is all down to results.

"They've had this bad spell and the chairman has decided the manager has got to go. It's as simple as that.

"I think every Albion fan will be shocked with it happening like this.

"I think Di Matteo deserved a bit longer. We are in mid-stream. What is going to happen now, who is going to take over, who is going to lead the ship?

"It's a big job for whoever takes over. It is easy to get rid of your manager. We've had quite a lot. All it does is cause confusion again at a vital part of the season."

Juve's Matri returns to haunt Cagliari

ROME (AFP)– Alessandro Matri returned to haunt his former club Cagliari on Saturday when he scored twice in Juventus's 3-1 win.

The victory ended a run of three straight defeats and eased the pressure on Juve coach Luigi Delneri.

Matri's goals sandwiched a strike from Cagliari's Robert Acquafresca before Luca Toni scored a late clincher.

It was a vital win for Juve as well with champions Inter Milan the visitors to Turin next week.

"It can be more difficult to play against Cagliari than against Inter," said Delneri.

"Who we're playing doesn't change anything for us.

"We have to show that we're a team that knows how to suffer, able to keep its feet on the ground and going forward week after week."

Cagliari coach Roberto Donadoni said it was strange seeing former charge Matri scoring against his team.

"It makes an impression seeing Matri score not for the Cagliari shirt as he was doing until a few days ago but for another shirt," he said.

"For sure, this time Matri didn't make Cagliari happy."

Cagliari goalkeeper Michael Agazzi had a match to forget as he was at fault for all three Juve goals.

On 20 minutes Matri tried his luck from just inside the area, shooting hard towards the near post but although Agazzi looked to have it covered, he let it slip through his grasp.

He then committed an absolute howler, letting a shot from Giorgio Chiellini slip through his fingers before being saved by an offside flag.

If Cagliari had failed to create much in the first half, they were a transformed team after the break.

Just six minutes after the restart, Andrea Cossu found space out on the left and chipped an inswinging cross behind the Juve defence where Acquafresca ran on to acrobatically volley home across Gianluigi Buffon.

The hosts could have had a second on the hour as Cossu cleverly took a quick free-kick, chipping over the napping Juve defence where Daniele Conti ran onto it but could not get a true contact on the ball and sliced it off target.

Matri had another chance but sent a near-post header just past the upright.

Midway through the half, Juve substitute Alessandro Del Piero tried his luck from range but shot too high.

Matri got his second on 75 minutes as he arrived at the back post to volley home Chiellini's cross, although Agazzi's positioning was again suspect.

Cagliari thought they had drawn level late on when Nene headed home a free-kick but it was disallowed for a foul on Toni.

And moments later Toni scored his first goal for the club six minutes from time to put the game to bed, heading home a Del Piero cross from 17 yards out, although again Agazzi's positioning looked questionable.

Udinese continued their bid for a Champions League finish as they beat Sampdoria 2-0 to move to within a point of the top four.

It was their fifth win, alongside two draws, since the turn of the year and only Inter Milan have gained more points than them in 2011.

Striker Antonio Di Natale reached 100 league goals for the club as he notched the second following Alexis Sanchez's opener.

"I've been waiting two weeks for that," said Di Natale.

"We're safe (having reached 40 points) now so we need to get as many points as possible and then see where we are."

For Sampdoria it was a fourth straight defeat in all competitions as the club continues to slide following the departure of strike-pair Antonio Cassano and Giampaolo Pazzini to AC Milan and Inter respectively.

Ballack to discover Germany future in March

BERLIN (AFP)– Veteran midfielder Michael Ballack will discover next month whether he still has a future in the Germany team under coach Joachim Loew, after being left out of the squad which will face Italy on Wednesday.

The 34-year-old played only his first 90 minutes last weekend for his Bundesliga club Leverkusen after a fractured leg in September kept him out of the game for four months.

On Friday, Loew opted to leave him out of the 22-man squad to face the 2006 World Cup winners in Dortmund for Wednesday's friendly.

In his absence, Bayern Munich defender Philipp Lahm is expected to captain Germany, as he did at South Africa's World Cup.

"We all know that Michael was still missing something after he played his first 90 minutes following a long injury," Loew told German daily Bild.

"He is still finding his rhythm and he has made a good impression.

"If everything runs accordingly, we will meet in the middle of March to look at what the next step is."

Ballack suffered a wretched 2010 as an injury to his right ankle ruled him out of the World Cup, and he fractured his left leg on only his third game back.

He last played for Germany in March 2010 and has 98 caps, but in his absence the Germans finished third at the World Cup in South Africa and Bastian Schweinsteiger's formed a strong midfield partnership with Sami Khedira.

Loew plans to meet with Ballack before the Euro 2012 qualifier against Kazakhstan on March 26. Germany play Australia in a friendly three days later.

Real Madrid'to offer cash and Negredo'for Aguero

MADRID (AFP)– Real Madrid will offer 28 million euros and striker Alvaro Negredo, who they would buy back from Seville, to land Atletico Madrid's Argentine striker Sergio'Kun' Aguero, sports daily Marca reported Friday.

Real sold Negredo to Sevilla in 2009 for around 14 million euros but they have the option of buying him back in the first two years for 17 million euros to include him in their offer for the player, it said.

"The operation is planned by Real Madrid and it now only needs to run its course this summer," the newspaper wrote without citing sources.

Last week Aguero signed a contract extension that commits him to Atletico Madrid until 2014.

At the end of January Atletico Madrid said it had turned down a 45-million-euro offer for the 22-year-old who was also reportedly being chased by English Premier League clubs Tottenham and Chelsea.

Real Madrid denied afterwards that it had bid for Aguero.

Arsenal's Fabianksi out for rest of season

LONDON (AFP)– Arsenal goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski will miss the rest of the season following shoulder surgery, Gunners manager Arsene Wenger said Thursday.

The Pole was injured during the warm-up ahead of Arsenal's Premier League match against Manchester City last month and has not played since.

It was a cruel blow for the 25-year-old, who this season had established himself as Arsenal's first choice, and Fabianski is now set to travel to Germany for surgery.

"We had bad news for Lukasz Fabianski because he needs surgery on his shoulder," Wenger said.

"He has decided after having seen a few specialists that he will have surgery in Germany. It means his season is over."

Wojciech Szczesny, who started the season as Arsenal's third choice goalkeeper, has impressed since stepping up to first-team action.

But the 20-year-old faces renewed competition from the fit-again Manuel Almunia.

"The competition for the places at the moment will be between Wojciech and Almunia," Wenger said.

"Wojciech will play the next game (against Newcastle on Saturday)."

Arsenal are currently second in the English Premier League, five points behind leaders Manchester United.

Arsenal's Wenger slams big-spending Chelsea

LONDON (AFP)– Arsene Wenger has accused Chelsea of backtracking on their pledge to respect UEFA's financial fair play plans after the Blues spent£75 million ($120 million) on transfer deadline day.

The arrival of Fernando Torres and David Luiz coincided with Chelsea's announcement of a£68.6 million operating loss for the last financial year.

Wenger believes this contradicts Chelsea's stated aim to balance the books and believes it signals a new era of spending by Blues' billionaire owner Roman Abramovich.

"It shows you two things; That for a while, Abramovich was a bit in no man's land where nobody could really guess whether he wanted to still invest or not," Wenger said.

"Certainly that has changed. He has decided to put big money in again, and that tells you that certainly in the summer more will come. He is back to full investment.

"He can tell you why, but that's how you can read it from the outside. If you don't invest for a while, it looks as if he's not as involved in it any more, doesn't like it as much. But£75 million, it means more will come.

"Chelsea supported the financial fair play, but in the morning they announce a£70 million loss and in the afternoon buy £75 million worth of players. Where's the logic in that? It's hard to guess.

"Officially they vote for the financial fair play, so they can explain much better than I why they do it."

Wenger was speaking after his side had recovered from falling behind to Everton to claim a 2-1 victory at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday through second half goals from Laurent Koscielny and Andrei Arshavin.

The result keeps Arsenal in second place, five points behind leaders Manchester United, but Wenger believes his side have the character to sustain their title challenge.

"I'm very happy because the spirit is maybe the aspect of the team that's been questioned the most, and that's where we've been the most convincing recently," Wenger said.

However, the victory came at the cost of an injury to Alex Song, while French midfielder Samir Nasri is sidelined for three weeks.

"Alex is injured," Wenger said."He cannot walk. He was kicked. I think it is by Koscielny. He knocks everybody out in our team.

"We have to see how he responds to that in the next days. He cannot work at the moment. Nasri's scan shows a hamstring strain. 21 days."

Everton manager David Moyes, meawhile, believes his side's chances of claiming a victory were hindered by referee Lee Mason's decision not to take strong action against Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas at half time.

Moyes claimed Fabregas delivered a volley of abuse at Mason who had controversially allowed Louis Saha's first half effort to stand.

"I'm not going to repeat them," said Moyes."They were disappointing comments from such a talented footballer."

Karimi reunited with Magath at Schalke

GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany (AFP)– Former Asian footballer of the year Ali Karimi was reunited with German football coach Felix Magath on Monday when he signed for Bundesliga side Schalke 04 until the end of the season.

The 32-year-old Iranian - capped 112 times - played under Magath during a largely unsuccessful two-year spell at Bayern Munich where he scored just three times and made only 33 appearances.

Karimi - who moved to Qatar after Bayern and then returned to Iran to play for Steel Azin - is Magath's 40th signing since he took over in July 2009.

The Iranian star is the fourth arrival during the winter transfer window, Magath having signed Greek veteran striker Angelos Charisteas, Ghana's Anthony Annan and Brazilian Avelar.

Schalke finished second last season but have struggled in the league this term, lying 11th a massive 25 points adrift of leaders Borussia Dortmund, though they are in the last 16 of the Champions League.
