BERLIN (AFP)– Bundesliga bottom side Borussia Moenchengladbach can still avoid relegation by winning three of their last four league games, insists coach Lucien Favre.
The five-time German champions -- whose last league title was in 1977 -- edged closer to the drop on Friday night with a 1-0 defeat at Mainz thanks to a late goal from Andre Schuerrle after'Gladbach striker Mike Hanke was sent off in the second-half.
"We can still avoid the descent into the second division, we must win three of our last four games," said Swiss Favre, who took charge in mid-February with his side bottom of the table -- where they have been since November 20.
They are four points from safety with seven points separating the league's bottom five teams.
But'Gladbach -- European Cup finalists in 1977 and two-time UEFA Cup winners -- have their work cut out in their bid to avoid the drop: on consecutive weekends they face league leaders Borussia Dortmund next Saturday, Hanover, Freiburg and Hamburg, all of whom are in the top eight.
